* A week later *

It was seven o’clock when Jane and Nikki got home from seeing 50 first dates. The two were crossing the hall to their apartment when they noticed the door was slightly cracked open. Jane ran to the door and slowly opened it. The sight inside was horrifying, there were books, movies, cd’s , clothes, and furniture all over the place. Nikki instantly shot through the door only to be stopped by a cautious Jane. Jane pulled Nikki back through the door way, looked her in the eyes and said, “ Nik we can’t go in there, not yet anyways.” Jane took out her cell phone and called the station to report the break in.

The first cruiser on the scene reached the apartment five minutes later and was soon accompanied by three more cruisers. Jane was surprised when the captain showed up.

Jane and Nikki were sitting in the kitchen watching the detectives search through the apartment when one of them walked up to them and said, “Jane, I’m detective Louis Guild and I’d like to ask you some questions.”

“Ok.” Jane shrugged she didn’t care she just wanted to find out who broke into her home.

“Do you have any idea who would do this?”

“No.”

“What time did you leave? Return?”

“We left about five. Right Nik?” Jane turned and looked at Nikki she had been staring into space.

“Huh.. Yeah five.”

“And we got home at seven.” Jane turned her attention back to the detective.

“Do you know of anything missing?”

“Oh my god, my gun!” Jane lept up from the chair she was sitting in and flew to her room. Her gun was still in her dresser drawer. She walked back to the kitchen and said, “My gun is still here, thank god. I would hate to think some kid on the street walked out of my house with a gun.”

“Thank you Jane, Nikki. That’s all the questions I needed answered, but if you have any questions feel free to call me.” Detective Guild waved down the other officers and left, but the captain hung around a few minutes longer.

“Jane let me know if anything else happens. I suggest not telling Sam about this until he gets back, ok?”

“Ok.” With this the captain left Jane and Nikki in the kitchen. They only knew they were alone when the door clicked shut.

Nikki finally spoke up without being asked to. “Jane how are we going to clean this place up tonight?”

“Don’t worry about it Nik, we can finish or start tomorrow.” Jane took a glance around the place, it looked like a hurricane hit inside.

“Jane I think I’m going to clean my room so I can get some sleep. We can work on the living room tomorrow.” Nikki got up from the kitchen table and carefully dodged the debris of items in the living room.

Jane sighed and headed for her own mess of a room. Who ever had broke in their home had been there a while making a mess of things.

~~~~~~~~~~
She was bending down to pick up some shirts when two large warm hands snuck their way up, under her shirt, and rested on her belly.
The only thing Jane could do was say, “Hi John.”
“Hello Jane.” Since he couldn’t kiss her at this point the buried his head in her hair and did his ever so seductive *sniff*. Easily turning around with his arms around her waist Jane gave him a sweet kiss on his luscious lips. After their mouths separated John said, “People were here.”
“Yes I know that. We got broke into, but nothing is missing.” Jane put her arms around his neck and pulled him down for a kiss. First kissing him on the lips then on his bottom lip slightly biting it as she pulled away. “How is tutoring going? Are you and Mr. Fern having a good time?” Jane released his neck and began piling up all the clothes off of the floor.
“Yes we are having fun. I have learned a lot in the past few days. He says I’m a fast learner. I’m starting to read better.” John smiled it made him proud that he was starting to fit into Jane’s world.
“John that is so great! One of these days you should read to me. I would love to see you in action.” Jane turned her eyes away from him before he could get any ideas. Nikki was still in the next room.
Jane wasn’t quick enough because John already had plans.
*********
Before she knew it Jane was being led to her bed. Jane knew there was nothing she could do to stop him and she wasn’t so sure if she wanted to.
John knew Jane had given in to her desire when she started placing kisses all over his neck. Slowly he reached under her shirt and skillfully removed it. Then in return Jane removed his while kissing a path up his rippled stomach to the hollow of his neck. John let a soft moan which made a very desire stricken Jane gently bite his bottom lip. Jane looked into his eyes as he lay there on the bed, the raw passion within his eyes and soul were intoxicating.
Not waiting any longer John took over the dominate position which made Jane release a giggle while saying “You like being in charge don’t you?”
He smiled and nibbled on her ear while saying in a heated voice, “Of course I do.” An instinct inside told John this was the moment to make his move and he did. He not only fulfilled his own desire he quenched Jane’s.
After their round about Jane put her jamies, got back in bed and said the one thing John had been waiting to hear, “John I love you.” Before he could say anything she was sound asleep on his shoulder. Whispering into her ear before he himself gave into the light of his dreams he said “I love you too.”
*****************************************
Slowly slipping back into conciousness Jane looked at the clock 3:00 am. Rubbing her eyes she turned to John who was asleep on his side facing her. He looked so peaceful, with the strands of hair falling over his face. Gently Jane pushed the locks of hair away from his tender face. Lightly she rubbed his cheek with the back of her hand. His skin was as soft and smooth as a baby’s bottom. ‘Like a baby’s bottom.’ Practically shouting Jane said Oh my gosh, quickly getting out from underneath John’s arm without waking him, Jane threw on her rob and half jogged half walked to the kitchen. She needed to know if she had taken her birth control pill yesterday. Thinking to herself ‘I can’t get pregnant, I’ve got a job to deal with.’
Grabbing the container from the cupboard Jane almost ripped the cover off of the case. The second it was open Jane’s eyes flew to yesterday’s slot, ‘Thank god.’ Jane sighed and took out the pill for today and swallowed it down with a glass of water. Placing the container on back on the shelf Jane left to see if Nikki was still asleep.
Peeking her head inside Jane’s eyes laid upon Nikki’s sleeping form. After seeing Nikki was fine Jane went back to her own room where John was still asleep. Or so she thought.
Jane entered her room and locked the door. Pulling off her robe Jane got back in bed and placed John’s arm around her waist. She was getting comfortable burying her head in his chest when John spoke, “Good morning.”
Jane about jumped out of her skin. Clutching her chest trying to slow her heart breathing Jane said, “Oh my god John, you scared me half to death. By the way Good morning to you too.”
John stole for a kiss and then said, “I didn’t mean to scare you.”
“It’s.” John stole another kiss. “Ok.” And another kiss. “Just don’t do it again.” Jane laughed, having a conversation right now would be useless. Pulling away from another kiss Jane said, “I think I’m ready to get out of bed.” John let out a soft growl, he wasn’t ready to get out just yet.
Sensing his frustration at her suggestion Jane said, “You don’t have to leave. You can stay and help me clean up my wreck of a house.” His only response was a kiss. Jane rolled out of the bed and began rummaging through the pile of clothes on the floor she had made the night before.
Picking out a large t-shirt and sweats Jane slowly removed her pj’s giving John a show. John let out a soft growl that sounded more like a purr when Jane removed her tank top revealing her milky white skin. Deep down John had a strong feeling of need to jump Jane right then and there.
Seeing he was all in knots Jane quickly finished changing from her night clothes to her clean lounge clothes. Before leaving the room Jane tied her hair up in a sloppy pony tail.
******************
Jane and John were sitting in the kitchen eating breakfast when a very sleepy Nikki stumbled out of her room. Before Jane could warn her, Nikki tripped over a pile of books and fell to the floor with a loud *thud*. Her only words of pain was a long drawn out “ouch.”
Now fully awake Nikki looked up to see Jane smiling and a concerned John. In a sarcastic voice she said, “Oh no, I’m fine really, thanks for asking.” Holding back her laughter Jane said, “I tried to warn you sweetie, but you were too busy falling.” Understanding Nikki was fine and Jane was making jokes about it John relaxed and let a small smile creep across his tender face.
As Nikki made her way over to the table, Jane got up and poured her a cup of coffee. The Porter sisters were known for their caffeine addiction. Sitting down and handing Nikki her coffee Jane said, “So how did you sleep?” Jane took a drink of her own coffee.
“Well I would have slept great if it wasn’t for that pounding in your room. What were you remodeling the place last night?”
Jane about choked on her coffee. “Oh I’m sorry Nik I was putting some things back on the walls.”
“Uh huh.” Nikki raised her eyebrows at a now rosy Jane. “So John how long have you been here?”
Being surprised by her questioning of him now he said, “Well I just got here to help clean up.”
Shaking her head Nikki sighed, “I see.”
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
After one more cup of coffee Nikki headed off to take a shower leaving John and Jane in the Living room to clean. Picking up this sty of a house was going to take more than four hands to clean it up and Jane knew that. Right away she sent John to work picking up books. He was about to pick up the stack of books Nikki fell over when he froze.
Jane not understanding why he had stopped asked, “What’s wrong?”
“I smell Jason and Nash.”
Setting down the cd’s in her hands Jane said, “What do you mean you smell Jason and Nash?”
“I smell them on these books.”
“John do you think they were the people who trashed my apartment?”
“I don’t know, I just know they were here.”
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Meanwhile over at Greystoke in Richard’s spacious office Nash and Richard were having a chat. “Nash, did you make sure it was trashed?”
“Yes. We also made sure nothing would lead back to us.”
“Good all I want is John. It seems that two birds are going to be killed with one stone. Having Jane Porter out to the way is going to make it a little easier to get John back.” An evil smile danced across Richard’s face.
Nash sat back and watched Richard plot his next move in his head for a moment and then spoke up, “ Jason sure does fancy her. I don’t see what he likes about her. But then again she was brutal with me on her last visit.
*The last time Jane had been at Greystoke, Nash had only put his hand on her shoulder while Richard was talking with her and she snapped at him. Jane had popped him in the nose with her palm and practically broken his nose. Richard had only laughed and suggested Jane leave.*
“Nash I’ll talk to you later, now get.” Nash got up from the chair he was sitting in and left leaving Richard and his evil mind to themselves.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
“Hello.” Came a voice on the other line.
“Hello, is this Detective Guild?” Jane was now sitting on the couch with John sitting practically in her lap.
“Yes, I’m detective Guild, who is this?
“This is Detective Jane Porter. You were at my apartment last night, you said to call if I thought I had some information. I think I do.”
“Yes, I remember. So what do you know?”
“I have a feeling I know who broke into my house.”
“Just a second Miss Porter while I get the case file.” Jane sat waiting patiently. “Hello, Ok Miss Porter, tell.”
“Ok, Jason Riz he was mad at me. He also has a crush on me and I won’t give him the time of day because I already have a boyfriend. He didn’t like that at all. The other person is Nash Kimball .”
“Is that all Miss Porter?”
“Yes, for now anyways.”
“Ok, I am on it right now. I will let you know what is going to happen.”
“Thank you.” Jane hung up the phone and turned her attention back to an anxious John.
Wanting to know what the detective said John asked, “So what did he say?”
“Well he said he was going to let me know what was going to happen and that’s it.” Jane sighed, this was going to be a hard thing to prove. ‘How could she explain that John had sniffed them out among her books.’ It wasn’t logical. ‘How could they ever believe John had a nose better than a K-9 police dog.'
Standing in her bedroom doorway Nikki watched and listened while John and Jane talked about Nash and Jason. She was a bout to interrupt when John and Jane both said, “Hello.” Nikki was surprised, she thought she was going to be sneaky and scare them, but it wasn’t likely to happen since John has keen senses.
Walking over to the overstuffed chair across from them Nikki said, “So what is going on that involves your ex-dirty partner and Nash?” Mumbling under her breath she said, “scumbags.” John heard this but didn’t know what it meant so he kept his mouth shut.
“Well Nik, not to worry you or anything but John and I think Jason and Nash trashed the place. I don’t trust either of them, and I’m thinking Richard is involved because Nash is his guard. I wouldn’t be surprised if Jason worked for Richard and made it look like he was transferred from L.A.”
“Oh my god!! That is not cool because they even went through my underwear drawer. That’s just…just not Right!!” Nikki had a disgusted look on her face. “So what ate we going to do? I mean do we just let the detectives work it out?”
“Nik, I think we should leave it up to the detectives on the case. We have too much to lose. But I think I should tell Kathleen.”
Nikki looked at Jane with a confused look and said, “So?”
“Well if you want to stay here while I go and talk to Kathleen that’s fine, but if you would rather go to a friends house that’s fine. I think a friends house would be safer.” Jane looked a little concerned things like ‘What if I’m gone and Niks home and they come back? What would I do?’ kept running through Jane’s already tense mind.
“I think I will stay at Mara’s for a while. I will leave after we get this placed cleaned up.”
~*~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~*~
An hour and a half later Nikki was saying goodbye. “Jane, I’ll see you tomorrow. There’s no use of coming back tonight. I’ll call you when I get there, and Yes my phone is charged and I have my charger.”
John and Jane were sitting on the couch. Jane was sitting with her legs stretched over Johns. As Nikki was walking out the door Jane said, “Bye Nik, I‘ll see ya tomorrow.” Nikki left shutting the door behind her.
John finally spoke up, “So are you ready to go see my aunt?”
Jane sighed and said, “Yeah, but first I need to take a shower.”
Getting up from the couch Jane was stopped by a gentle hand on her shoulder. “Jane,” was all John said. He knew she would not protest after this.
The only thing Jane could manage to say was, “Yes.” One thing went through her mind, ‘Why does the mention of my name bring me to my knees?’ Before she knew what had hit her she was in John’s arms standing in front of the shower. John carefully let her down to the ground and began taking off his shirt. Once rid of his shirt John took to remove Jane’s extra-large t-shirt. Jane shivered as his hands touched her bare skin. Seeing that she was cold John started the water to get the bathroom a little warmer.
Jane was about to remove her pants when John put his hands on her hips and said, “Let me do this.” Removing her hands from the waistband of her sweats John replaced her hands with his own. Jane laughed, his cold hands tickled. Not waiting any longer for him to remove her underwear Jane took that responsibility and flung them to the ground. John smiled Jane was having fun with him.
After removing his own pants John hopped into the hot spray of the shower. Jane not wanting to miss out on the fun joined him in the hot splash of the shower.
The water felt so good. It was like all the burdens in the world disappeared with the water down the drain. It was even more refreshing when John began lathering Jane’s back. Taking her scented cleanser John put a small amount on the body sponge. With one swift gentle rub on her back Jane was relaxing ever more. John could see the muscles in her back relax as he moved the sponge over her back. Lost in the good feeling Jane said, “Don’t stop that feels so good.”
John said something but Jane didn’t hear. His calloused hands were so gentle even if they were rough when he touched her. Jane was about to say something when John spun her around to face him. He said, “Your not falling asleep on me are you?”
Laughing at his comment she said, “No of course not.”
“Good, because I want you to rub my back.” John smiled, handed Jane the sponge and turned around. Jane grabbed the scented soap again and put some more on the sponge. After watching his back relax Jane spun him around and said, “Your not falling asleep on Me are you?”
Seeing that Jane had just made a joke out of what he said, John leaned in and kissed her. The passion in the kiss was enough to drive Jane into the wall. She hit it gently but it was enough for her to break the kiss and laugh. Taking another chance at the kiss Jane leaned up and gave him a kiss that was just as powerful as his. John taking the initiative to make this shower more began moving his hands all around her body, sending shivers in every direction.
Before he could get any farther Jane was putting a stop to this. She raised up her hands and pushed back against his chest and said, “We have to go to your aunts remember.” John sighed and made Jane turn back around so he could wash her auburn tresses.
Jane liked the feel of his hands in her long hair. It was soothing to have a head massage. After her hair was washed Jane washed his golden mane. His hair was silky and wavy like her own, but it was different. His hair was like a lions mane the glistens in every light. With a quick rinse of his head the two jumped out of the shower and into the cold of the bathroom.
John helped Jane dry off before he got dressed. He didn’t mind being wet in front of her. He remembered the first time she had seen him naked in the atrium. She was modest then but she wasn’t the least bit modest now. John liked the fact that Jane now felt comfortable being in front of him, clothes or not.
Jane dressed in five minutes flat. The sun was setting and it was getting cooler outside. She didn’t worry about drying her hair, but she did remember to get a coat with a hood so when she went outside she wouldn’t get pneumonia. That was the last thing she needed.
~*~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~*~
Pulling up in front of Kathleen’s house fifteen minutes later John and Jane hopped out of the car and walked up the front steps hand in hand. Knocking on the door, holding John’s hand made Jane feel like she was going to make a big announcement.
Mary opened the door, “Hello Mr. Clayton, Miss Porter. Come in.” Stepping aside Mary let the happy couple pass. “Would you like me to get Ms. Clayton?”
Jane turned and looked John in the face then turned back to Mary and said, “No we would like to speak to her in her office.”
“Ok then follow me.” Mary turned and crossed the foyer and began her ascent up the stairs to Kathleen’s office.
Mary knocked and Kathleen’s voice on the other side said, “Yes, What is it?” Mary opened the door and let John and Jane passed. Then she closed the door and headed back down stairs.
“John, Jane What is it?” Kathleen looked pleased to see them but also worried about why they were there. She hoped to goodness they weren’t engaged or pregnant. John needed to learn a few more things before he thought about marriage or having a family.
“Well Kathleen umm..” Jane began but was interrupted by Kathleen.
“Oh my god You’re pregnant!” Kathleen’s thoughts had gotten the better of her.
“NO, NO, NO I’m not pregnant. I don’t have the time nor patience to be pregnant.” Jane was shocked Kathleen didn’t seem like the type of person to jump down her throat about unprotected sex and children.
“Oh good. Please excuse me. Seeing you two holding hands and smiling made me jump to conclusions. Continue with what you were saying before I rudely interrupted.”
“Well my apartment was broke into last night and.” Jane stopped she was worried Kathleen might interrupt again.
The only thing Kathleen said was, “Do continue.”
“Well John smelled Jason my ex-temporary partner and Nash’s scent on some of my things. I’ve told the detective and he said he would call me back. I’m a little worried about going back to work tomorrow.” Jane paused and racked her brain she needed to remember something else. “Oh and I believe Richard is behind all of this.:
Understanding Jane was done Kathleen spoke up, “Ok. What should we do?”
“Well I think it is best to not get involved just yet. I mean Jason is out of his mind and so is Richard so leaving it to detective Guild for right now seems best.”
*~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**
John was standing there watching the two women he loved most discuss this issue. Interrupting them probably wasn’t the best idea so he slipped away to the atrium to do some thinking. As he padded up the marble stairs the memories of the shower he and Jane had shared danced through his mind. Jane’s skin was so soft and her body reacted to the littlest touch of his long fingers. He liked the way her muscles would twitch as he made small circles on her back. Oh she definitely was his mate. And he wanted to find a way to show her that.
~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~
Sitting up on the balcony overlooking the waterfall, John sat going over ideas. He had paper and a pencil so he could write down his ideas and go over them with Kathleen if he couldn’t figure it all out by himself. So far the only things written on the paper was:
1. Flowers
2. Candy
3. Candles
4. Dinner
5. New dress for Jane
6.
John hit a slump, he had already figured out what he wanted to do but now he didn’t know how to go about doing it all. He kept thinking over some of the plans, “Where should we go to dinner? Where should I buy the dress? What should it look like? I should probably take Kathleen with me.”
Lately John and his tutor Mr. Fern had been working with money. It wasn’t a surprise to Mr. Fern that John was good with numbers. He thought John used numbers while hunting or grabbing banana’s or something.
~*~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~
A few blocks away Jason sat in the dark, cold interrogation room at the station. He had been sitting at home lounging around looking at a book. He was brought in by detective Guild and his partner detective Dolton.
Inside the dark room Jason and his fellow detectives sat looking at each other waiting for the other to make the first move. Detective Guild was nervous he usually interrogated citizens not fellow officers. Even though Jason was new in the department it felt wrong to detective Guild. Jason was the first to speak, “So why am I here?”
“Well Riz you are here because of a break in at an apartment. We have suspicion to believe you were involved in it.”
“Why would I break into someone’s apartment? I am a detective.” Jason hoped they bought it. He kept thinking, ‘How did they figure this out?’
Detective Guild looked calm now, this wasn’t as hard as he thought. “Well that’s why we are here getting your side of the story. Do you have an alibi?”
“Well Yes, Of course.” Jason quickly racked his brain for the most believable lie he could think of.
“You do. Do tell.” Guild quickly made sure the tape recorder was still working and in the right place.
“Ok. Hehem. I was at home watching tv. I had some pizza. I read for a couple hours. And then I went to sleep.”
“From what time were you home? Were you there all day?”
“Well umm Yea.”
“Did you do anything else? Make any phone calls? You might as well tell us because we will find out.”
“I made some calls. I don’t remember who to though.”
“You mean to tell me you don’t remember who you called?”
“Yes I do.” Jason looked concerned. ‘What if they weren’t buying it?’
By now Detective Guild was a little jittery Jason Riz wasn’t telling the whole truth. His eyes twinkled when he talked and right now they were dull and dry looking. “So Jason, Did you order your pizza?”
“No. Yes.”
“Well what is it No or Yes?”
“I ordered it but not that day. It was left overs from the night before.” The one thing he thought was, “They’re on to me.”
“Where did you order the pizza from?”
“I got it from Cosmic Pizza on 1912 W Main.”
“Ok Riz. That will be all for right now.”
“Good, I’ve got work tomorrow morning.” Jason got up from the chair and exited through the giant metal door.
Walking through the bullpen made Jason feel like a fish out of water. It wasn’t good when a detective walked out of the interrogation room after being brought there by fellow officers. Jason wasn’t talked to as he exited the station, he kept quiet and flagged down a taxi
Back at the mansion Jane was just leaving Kathleen’s office when her phone rang. Jane fumbled for the phone, “Hello.”
“Hi Jane it’s Guild. I just interrogated Riz and he’s really suspicious. He lied through his teeth the whole time.”
“How can you tell?” Jane stopped walking and stood where she was.
“Well you know how his eyes always sparkle well they were dull and dry looking. He also fumbled when he talked, didn’t quite know the story.”
“What are you going to do about it?”
“I want to get Nash in next and play the ‘Partner already told us you did it’ type thing.”
“Oh Ok. Let me know what happens.” Jane slowly began walking towards the stairs.
“Yea sure Jane.” The line went dead and Jane snapped her phone shut and started up the stairs to the atrium. She already knew John was there.
~*~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~
Back in the atrium John was pacing the floor. What could he give Jane that she didn’t have already? She had a job she liked, a family she loved, friends. The idea that came to John hit him like a freight train, ‘He could give her something of his.’ He knew just the thing. Grabbing the pencil and paper he didn’t notice Jane had entered the warm, luscious climate of the atrium and was heading straight toward him.
Jane loved it when John was interested in what he did and as she rounded the trees she saw he was. He looked like he was lost in thought and she didn’t want to interrupt him so she silently crept up behind him and wrapped her arms around his tight, muscular stomach.
John didn’t react like he normally would when someone touched him, he could smell the fragrance of Jane’s hair and skin. He carefully turned over the piece of paper and laid it on the floor and turned and wrapped is own arms around her waist.
Jane smiled and placed her head on his broad shoulders.
John gently rubbed her auburn locks and kissed her head. Jane thought it was so sweet how he knew the way to comfort her. It sometimes scared her to think that he knew more about her than she did herself. In barely a whisper John said, “Jane what’s wrong?”
Jane moved her head slightly so she could look up into his strong face. “Nothings wrong. I just talked to detective Guild though and he thinks Jason is lying.” John didn’t say anything he just stroked her cheek with the back of his hand. Deep down Jane was a little nervous about going back to work tomorrow. She was glad Jason and her weren’t partners anymore and Sam would be home in a day or two. It hit her she needed to talk to Sam. Breaking away from John wasn’t the easiest task in the world but she told him she would be back.
John took this as a chance to place the paper with his plans up on the tree near his bed on the balcony. As Jane began dialing Sam’s number John disappeared into the dense growth of the atrium.
The phone rang but Sam didn’t answer. Jane tried again, but still no answer. She closed her phone and turned back in the direction of where John had been standing before but he was no place in sight. Jane was about to call out his name when he landed gently in front of her
At that moment Sam was walking in his front door. He couldn’t get to his phone when it rang so he told himself he’d call back whoever it was. He hoped it wasn’t Diane the gorgeous brunette he had met on his vacation.
~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~
John walked towards Jane and wrapped his fingers up in her hair, Jane leaned into his touch, ‘escaping now seemed like a great idea.’ John sensing her growing desire leaned in and kissed her smack on the lips. The kiss was filled with so much passion that the whole city could have been lit up like the ‘Griswalds’ on National Lampoons Christmas Vacation.
~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~
Sam put his bags down on his bed and headed back to the living room to check is cell phone. Sitting down on the couch he looked at the missed calls, ‘Jane’s cell. What on earth does that girl do while I’m gone? Monkey boy must not be doing his job.’ Sam shook his head and dialed Jane’s number.
~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~
Back in the atrium John and Jane were trading passionate kisses. They were in the middle of one when Jane’s cell rang. Against her lips John said, “Don’t get that.” Disregarding that took out her phone and said, “Porter.”
“Hello Jane. You sound winded maybe now is not a good time to talk, huh?” Sam laughed, he was wrong ‘Monkey Boy was doing his job after all.’ Sam shook his head he didn’t want to think about that.
“Very funny Sam. So where are you?” Jane put her hand on her cheek she was blushing even if she wasn’t looking at Sam’s face.
“I’m at home. I just got here actually, so what’s up?”
“Well I don’t want to talk to you about it on the phone.”
“Where should we talk then?” Worry began to plague Sam’s mind.
“I’m not sure, maybe your place or here at Kathleen’s. I don’t think it’s safe to talk about important things in my house.”
“Why not?”
“I don’t know if it is wired.”
“Wired? Why would your house be wired? Jane what on earth has been happening while I was gone?”
“I will tell you later. When and where do you want to talk Sam?”
“I’ll meet you at 8:00 at Kathleen’s. My place is a wreck. I need a maid or a wife.”
Jane laughed and confirmed the time.
~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~
Sam hung up the phone and went to try and make a dent on the mess of a room he had. His clothes were strewn all over the place. He had wanted to leave quick so he didn’t bother putting all of the clothes in a pile.
John and Jane left the comfort of the atrium for the open dining room where Mary had prepared dinner.
~**~**~**~**~***~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~
8:00 Kathleen’s house
Since Sam and Jane had last talked Sam had cleaned his apartment which was a miracle. He had eaten and taken a shower too. John and Jane had had a nice dinner with Kathleen where they made small talk.
Sam arrived at 8:00 on the dot ready to listen. Sitting down in the parlor Sam took the liberty of starting the conversation. “So what in the hell has been going on around here? Couldn’t you have waited until I got back?”
“Actually your leaving brought this on.” Jane put her hands in her lap an looked Sam in the eyes.
“Your not going to blame this on me are you?” Sam was getting agitated but he kept his cool.
“No Sam I’m not.”
“Good now tell me what has been going on.” Sam put on a small smile. John knowing the story already headed back to the atrium.
Jane began her story not going into every detail. “Nik and I went to the movies and when we got back the door was slightly cracked. I immediately called the station and they all came. Guild the detective on the case said he’d keep in touch. John showed up and helped me clean and while we were putting away some books he froze. When I asked what was wrong he said he smelled Nash and Jason. I instantly called Guild and told him about my haunch.” Jane stopped and took a sip of her water from one of the water bottles Mary had left.
“Have they been interrogated?” Sam leaned forward and took one of the bottles for himself.
“Yeah Jason has. Guild suspects him but there isn’t any evidence yet. He is going to talk to Nash and notify me.”
Up in the atrium John had grabbed the notes he had written down and left to talk to Kathleen.
Kathleen was sitting in her leather chair looking at some documents when John silent as a mouse crept into the room. She didn’t notice he was there until she saw his shadow on her desk. Even though she knew it was John Kathleen still jumped a bit when she looked up at him. “John you shouldn’t sneak up on me like that.”
John sat down in the chair with his feet underneath him and said, “sorry.”
“So John what do you need? Anything I can help you with?” Kathleen sat back in her chair and looked at John as a mother would her son.
“Well I want to surprise Jane.”
“How do you plan to do that?”
“I have some ideas.” John handed Kathleen the paper with his ideas on it. Kathleen looked over the list and smiled. ‘John was smart and knew exactly how to get the girls.’ John watched as Kathleen looked at his notes. He thought it was a good sign that she was smiling. “So.” John prompted.
“Well mister I believe you’ve got some good ideas, but how can I help?”
“I need help picking out the dress for Jane. And getting reservations for the restaurant and ordering the flowers.”
Kathleen smiled ‘John was going to blow Jane out of the water.’ “John I think I can help you. It would be my pleasure to help you do these things for Jane.”
“Good, how do we know what size dress she wears?” John was smiling from ear to ear. This was really going to happen.
“You can ask or you can be a detective and see what sizes the dresses are in her closet. Do you plan on getting matching shoes?”
“Is that a good thing to do?”
“Of course it is. Us women LOVE shoes. You’ll need to find out what size shoe she wears as well.” John picked up his paper and borrowed the pen from Kathleen’s desk and wrote down: check Jane’s dress and shoe size.
“John by the way we need to get you some shoes as well.” He scowled ‘shoes hurt his feet and made him feel confined.’ “Don’t worry John these will fit your feet. We’ll go visit Louis Monet about getting you some specially made shoes.” John’s mind eased up but he still didn’t like shoes. He kept positive though, ‘Whatever it takes to please Jane.’
Down in the parlor Sam and Jane were talking about Diane. Sam didn’t tell Jane how he met her or where. He wasn’t one to kiss and tell. Jane tried to pry things out of him but he wouldn’t let up. He just kept saying, “She’s gorgeous, smart, caring, and has a sense of humor.” One good thing about her was she dished out as much crap as he could and that was a definite turn on to Sam.
Changing the subject Sam said, “So what’s going on with the monkey boy and you?” He grinned. Sam knew exactly what buttons to push to make Jane blush. Sure enough she did. She was glad Kathleen hadn’t stayed around to chat with them.
“So where are you staying tonight?” Sam raised his eyebrows and put on a half-ass smile. Jane quickly shot back “Is that all you think about Sam?” Sam just laughed and took a swig of his water. Being serious now Jane said, “I’m not sure actually. My place is probably bugged but I only need a place to sleep.”
Regaining his composure Sam said, “Well partner my couch is free and you’re welcome to it.”
“Thanks Sam but I’m sure it’s safe to stay at the apartment. Nik’s over at a friends house so I don’t have to worry about her. And I can always call you and John…well he’s always around and I’ve got a gun.”
“Is that a bad thing? Having John around? All the time.”
“No. Besides I like having more than one option of security and John and you I can count on.” Jane smiled.
“Well then I’ll see you tomorrow.” Sam got up from the couch and made his way to the door. Jane said goodbye before he exited, but as soon as the door was closed she was going to go say goodnight to Kathleen.
Over at Greystoke Nash was being summoned for interrogation.
Guild didn’t want him to get a lead from Jason about his own interrogation.
Even though they only wanted to interrogate Nash and get his alibi he refused. Guild was trying to persuade him, “What do you have to hide? If you are innocent give us your alibi. It would make things a lot easier on the both of us.”
“I don’t want to talk to you.” Nash folded his arms on his chest to try and make his statement crystal clear.
“Well then I’ll be back with a warrant for your arrest. Only the guilty won’t talk.”
“Fine, I don’t care.” He was trying to be calm. ‘How was Richard going to react to his arrest?’
“Ok then we’ll be back with a warrant, so don’t you flee the country.” Guild turned and walked out of the room. He WOULD be back tomorrow with a warrant.
Nash watched Guild and the other two silent officers leave. He didn’t appreciate being interrogated. He needed to talk to Richard before they got back so Nash headed for Richards private office.
John and Kathleen were looking at each other when Jane entered the room. Looking from John to Kathleen she said, “What’s up?”
Kathleen looked up from their gaze and said, “Not much discussing some things with John. You?”
“Well I just wanted to come say goodnight. I’m going to go stay at my place. Need to get things organized for work.”
“Ok then I guess asking if you wanted to stay here is out of the question. Sleep good Jane. I’ll be seeing you soon.” Kathleen got up from her chair, hugged John and Jane, then disappeared down the hall in the direction of her room.
Tarzan got up from his crouch position on the chair and stood as close to Jane as he could. He *sniffed* her hair and looked into her eyes. Jane didn’t say anything at first, the way he scented her always sent Lightning bolts of heat and passion down her spine. After regaining her thoughts she said, “I’ll see you tomorrow.” John didn’t say anything he just backed up a little bit. He had plans for later, they did include Jane but not this moment. He needed to get to work on his plan. Jane touched his cheek and left the room.
Back at Greystoke Nash was talking or shouting with Richard. “NASH I TOLD YOU NOT TO LEAVE ANY EVIDENCE!!!” Richard was fuming.
“I thought we didn’t. I don’t know how this all got started. I’m gonna go to jail tomorrow because of your need to be in control!!!”
If Richard was hot before he was on FIRE now. “NASH DON’T START WITH ME! I DON’T THINK YOU WANT TO GET ME GOING ABOUT WHAT I CAN DO TO YOU!! I COULD HAVE LEFT YOU IN JAIL THE FIRST TIME!!”
“WHAT!!! That wasn’t even my fault. I may have shot someone but I didn’t kill nobody. I was defending myself.” Nash turned away from Richard’s blazing stare. If he hadn’t then he might have been blown up by Richard’s anger. In a somewhat calm voice Nash said, “Richard, I just wanted to let you know I’m going to be interrogated tomorrow. I didn’t want to start a fight. I messed up, I don’t know how but I did. Now get off my case. I’ll handle this. You know I’m a good liar. Don’t worry.”
“Worry!! Yeah right good liar my ASS. You better not get me involved or I’ll have your ass dismantled, before you can say Security!!!
Richard played hard ball and Nash knew that. He didn’t want to die anytime soon so he said goodbye and left.
As soon as Jane got home she got out her stuff for work and hit the sack. She hadn’t realized how tired she was. Jane laid in the dark for 5 minutes before she was lost in a world of dreams.
John watched through the window as Jane went about her room and finally lay down for bed. The second he knew she was deep asleep he climbed through her window.
Usually silent and graceful John got excited and nearly tripped over a stray shoe. He picked it up and put it down in Jane’s closet.
Sifting through her closet John found her dresses. He carefully read the tags of each. A couple were a size 4/5 and others were a 5/6. Since his math skills had improved he estimated and made a mental note of size 5 dress. After pushing the clothes back in line he bent down to find out her shoe size. John didn’t go for her tennis shoes he went straight to her scrappiest high heel. They were a 7. Adding to his earlier note he said ‘shoes 7.’
This time John didn’t let the shoe make a sound. He carefully and silently placed the shoe back on the floor and crept over to Jane’s side of the bed.
She looked so peaceful with her hair falling across her face and her hand over her eyes. John was surprised when Jane suddenly moved her hand and said, “John are you there?” He quickly moved into the shadows. Tarzan didn’t want Jane to know he was there. Hearing no response she quickly drifted back to sleep for the rest of the night.
*~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~
When he got back to the atrium John wrote down, “dress 5, shoes 7” on his plan paper. He decided he would talk to Kathleen about getting the dress and shoes in the morning. He hoped it wouldn’t be too hard to pick out clothes. Since he knew he had Kathleen to help with this he let his worries die and went to sleep on the atrium balcony above the peaceful waterfall.
The next morning as soon as Kathleen was awake John began his questioning about shopping and shared the information he found out the night before. He had slept but only until the sun rose and that wasn’t long after he drifted off to sleep. John had been waiting in Kathleen’s room since dawn because he wanted to get everything planned out now. Patience wasn’t one of his strong suits.
“Kathleen where do we get the dress?”
Wiping the sleep from her eyes Kathleen said, “Macy’s is where we will get the dress and shoes.”
“Where is Macy’s? And who is Macy?” John was ecstatic, his plans were finally getting put to into action.
“John slow down would ya. I haven’t had coffee, food, or a shower yet. I’ll explain some more later.
Sitting in the breakfast nook drinking her coffee and eating some fruit Kathleen listened to Johns plans and information about Jane’s clothes and shoe sizes. She was impressed by John’s estimation skills.
John was happy to be telling Kathleen his plans, but he left out the most important detail that only he was supposed to know. Kathleen got up from her chair and placed the empty fruit bowl in the sink. John watched her move around thinking, ‘Kathleen’s almost like my mom, I should get her something. But what?’ John shook his head, ‘one thing at a time.’
Over at the station Nash was being brought in for interrogation in handcuffs.
Guild had gotten a warrant for Nash to be brought in for questioning. Nash didn’t put up a fight this time. He didn’t want Richard to kill him with torture.
Inside the dark interrogation room Nash sat in silence. He wasn’t going to talk without an explanation first. Guild began the questioning, “Mr. Kimball where were you Saturday night?”
“Before we talk detective…..Guild I would like to know why I am here.”
“Well you are here because of a case I am investigating and there is evidence that leads back to you and another man.”
“Who is the other man? Has he been interrogated?” Nash sat forward in his chair so he was in the light a little bit more.
“Yes he has. He said you two had broken into the place looking for some stuff. He also said it was your idea. Now Nash why don’t you tell me your side of the story.”
Nash sat back in the chair and said, “I don’t have a “my side of the story” answer. I didn’t do anything.”
“Mr. Kimball if you don’t have a side of the story then tell me your alibi.”
Jane was drying her hair when her cell phone started ringing. Quickly putting down the blow dryer Jane ran to her bedroom where her cell phone was ringing.
Picking it up and hitting the talk button she said, “Porter.”
“Goodmorning Partner. You ready for work yet cuz I’m waiting outside.” Just then there was a knock at the door. Jane hung up her cell and went to open the door.
He walked in with two large coffees and a huge grin. “What are you so happy about?” Jane questioned as she took one of the coffees and took a sip.
“I had a visitor last night that’s all.” Sam’s eyes became cloudy and Jane understood.
“So Diane’s really great huh?” Jane smiled, she loved teasing Sam after he teased her about Tarzan.
Coming out of his fantasy land Sam said, “You could say so.”
“Ok then Partner. Let me get my hair dried, then we can go and you can tell me all about it.” Jane set down the coffee and retraced her steps back to the bathroom.
~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~
Kathleen walked down the stairs with John closely on her heels. Ever since she had woken up John had followed her around. She could tell he was giddy over his plans for Jane. The two were going to go to Macy’s as soon as they got the call from Mary telling them the limo was there.
As they reached the foyer Mary came out of the living room and said, “The car is out front waiting Ms. Clayton.”
“Thank you Mary.” Kathleen and John made there way out to the car with Mary waving goodbye as she closed the door.
Inside the limo John fussed over the shoes he was wearing. Kathleen had said he should wear his fathers shoes until after they got his new ones. John and her were not only going to Macy’s they were going to go to Louis Monet to get sized for shoes.
The ride to the station was boring for Jane. Sam talked about Diane the whole time. He didn’t talk about him and her it was about how great she looks in this and how pretty her outfits always are. Jane figured it was payback from the way she talked about Mike when they first started going out.
“She has the prettiest green eyes. Jane you should meet her. Jane…Jane…Snap out of it.” Sam looked over at her. She had been staring out the window zoning out Sam and his Diane talk.
“Sorry Sam. What were you saying?” Jane put on her most sincere face.
“Nothing never mind. I see how it is though.” Sam returned his attention back to the road.
“What is that supposed to mean?”
“Nothing.” He didn’t say another word until they reached the station.
~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~**~
“Hello Ms. Clayton. Welcome to Macy’s. Would you like a personal shopper to assist you while you look for a ravishing new outfit?” Macy’s was John and Kathleen’s second stop. Louis’ shop was a few blocks before so they stopped there first.
“Yes please but no I’m not here for a ‘ravishing’ outfit for me. I am here with my nephew. He is really doing the shopping.” Kathleen smiled and turned to look at John who had been smelling the perfume samples by the door. “John. Are you ready to shop?”
“Yes!” John walked up to the personal shopper and said, “I need to find a size 5 dress for Jane.”
“Marlene will be your personal shopper than Mr. Clayton.” The manager turned and left.
“Oh a date this must be for. Right this way Mr. Clayton.” Marlene turned and headed towards the women’s department.
Kathleen smiled as she watched John look at all of the beautiful dresses. He picked out two that he really liked. One was red even though he wanted black. It was knee length with a flowy bottom. It had spaghetti straps and a V cut neck line. The second dress was black the color he preferred to get. It was strapless with a corset top and a flowy bottom that started right after the corset.
John studied both dresses but finally went with the black one which he though would go good with his surprise. Marlene was surprised, ‘a man that gorgeous that knew how to shop.’ “Great choice Mr. Clayton. Is there anything else?”
“Yes. I need to find matching high heels. Size 7.”
“Right this way. I think I know the perfect pair.”
Marlene was right. She did know the right pair. The shoes were black with open toes. They had sequined straps that would make Jane’s toes dressed up. That also brought another idea to him.
Kathleen couldn’t believe it. After 18 years in the Jungle John knew how to shop. She might have to take him shopping more often for clothes for him.
“Is that all you need Mr. Clayton?”
“Yes.” John smiled as Marlene picked up the shoes.
“Wait. I think there is something else we need.” Kathleen decided it was time to get John something for this special night he had planned.
“Ok Ms. Clayton. What is it you two need?” Marlene looked happy, she loved helping the rich people that came in. Especially when they were kind like Kathleen and John.
“John will need a suit.”
